Some useful information about making candles

Use a double boiler to melt the wax. It can be replaced with an electric oven. IMPORTANT: Do not use glassware.

There are many types of wax, but almost all of them melt at a temperature of 90 degrees Celsius.

Also it is desirable to have a thermometer nearbywhich will help monitor the temperature. It is better to use a thermometer with a steel rod and a scale on top. It can be purchased at specialized laboratory equipment stores. A steel rod thermometer can be used to mix wax.

Be careful if you decide to melt the wax over an open fire, as in this case the wax may catch fire.

Use baking soda to extinguish, but not water. It is also worth knowing that overheated wax will begin to give off acrolein is a toxic byproduct. Do not forget to take care of good ventilation indoors.

Materials for making candles

Indeed, how to make candles with your own hands without special materials? In the work we will come in handy:

  • Wax melting vessel
  • Candle molds
  • Casserole (for a water bath)
  • Sticks (the first is to fix the wick, the second is to mix the wax)
  • Decorative items to decorate the product
  • Wax crayons
  • Household candles or cinders of old candles
  • Paper Thread (100% Cotton)

All this will help us to create, if not a wax masterpiece, then a beautiful original candle. So here we go!

What is needed for creativity

The best part is that to get started you need a minimal set of materials:

  • candle gel, wax or paraffin,
  • a wick or cotton thread without synthetic impurities for its manufacture,
  • candle pouring mold,
  • elements for decoration.

Wax or paraffin can be used from ordinary household candles, from them it will not be difficult to remove the finished wick. Candle gel is also easy to do with your own hands. Instead of an expensive form, you can take any suitable refractory container - a beautiful cup, a jar, a tin box. In a word, the start of a new hobby will not cost very much. We can say that this is one of the economical hobbies.

Based on the main material used for the manufacture of candles, two basic technologies are distinguished - wax and gel, which are very similar in many respects, but, nevertheless, have their own nuances in work.

Gel Candle Example

As an example, consider the preparation of an aquarium candle that will contain marine decorations.

- gel for candles (several colors are possible),

- a few clean decorative objects that will be inside the candle, and decorate it. Since the theme is marine, you can use, for example, shells or toys on the marine theme.

1. Put the gel for candles in a water bath,

2. use a slow fire to warm the gel to 100C,

3. fasten the wick with the foot on the bottom of the mold with glue so that the wick is in the middle, which ensures the best burning of the candle, you also need to fix the wick on top of the mold (you can use ordinary threads),

4. it's time to use decorative objects that you can, as you would like to spread out at the bottom of the mold - naturally, they should not be inflammable, you can put several objects at the initial stage, and others a little later,

5. decor items inside the candle should not be placed closer than 6 millimeters to the wick, and preferably closer to the walls of the form so that they are better visible,

6. Before you start pouring the gel, it is advisable to heat the mold, and this can be done with a hairdryer - so you can get rid of the bubbles,

7. watch the temperature of the gel, and when cool to 80-90С, you can start to slowly fill the candle,

* The best option is to fill in layers, i.e. first fill in a little gel and after a while, when the gel at the bottom of the mold solidifies a little, you can fill in a new layer, and so on until the mold is filled,

* You should not wait for a long time if you do not want the borders of the layers to be visible,

* if you use several colors, then you can make them smoothly overflow in the form, while you also need to wait a little while the bottom layer hardens a little, otherwise the colors will mix,

8. You can use the candle in a day.

The secrets of making candles from wax or paraffin

In the process of creating a product from wax, the most responsible moment is the melting of the material. Here you need good dexterity and speed of action, since molten wax or paraffin cools quickly, in addition, it is very hot and can easily burn.

Also, before making a candle with your own hands, it is important to choose the thickness of the wick correctly: if you make it excessively thick, the candle will melt and smoke too much, and a very thin one will constantly go out. The density of the wick's twisting plays an important role - for wax and paraffin candles, the threads should be twisted slightly loosely so that the flame does not go out.

There is no universal advice here - the optimal thickness and density of twisting of the threads for the wick will have to be deduced only from personal experience, by the method of tests and experiments. Each master eventually develops his own formula and the secret of successful work.

DIY gel candles

To make beautiful transparent candles that do not emit any smell or smoke, you can use ready-made gel wax, or you can prepare consumables yourself. In the latter case, you need to purchase ingredients such as glycerin, tannin, gelatin, distilled water and mix them, boil over low heat until the liquid evaporates completely.

This technology is somewhat more complicated than wax, but the result is worth the effort - the products are very elegant and unique. During cooking, the mixture may become cloudy, but this is a temporary phenomenon that disappears immediately after the gel cools.

The gel opens up a lot of different possibilities for decoration. For example, shells, pebbles, starfish, dried citrus fruits or flowers that are filled with transparent wax look very beautiful. This way women can make candles with their own hands at home, looking for a hobby in maternity leave, since harmful substances are not released during work.

VERY IMPORTANT

* only melt the wax in a water bath and follow the instructions of the mold or wax, since the temperature at which the wax melts depends on factors such as: the quality of the wax and mold, as well as the type of candle you want to make,

* overheating of the wax is hazardous to health and its vapor may ignite if a temperature of 180C is reached,

* for extinguishing burning wax DO NOT use water - use a rag.

* use a clean and dry form,

* Souvenirs with which you want to decorate a candle should be clean and non-flammable (you can wash them with warm mineral oil).

Create home candlelight

Separately, it should be said about aroma candles - they are also easy to make at home. The advantage of home-made scented candles is also that you can have one hundred percent confidence in the environmental friendliness and harmlessness of aromatic components.

The traditional way of aromatization is to add a few drops of essential oil to the wax or gel. In principle, you can use any, but it should be borne in mind that during the combustion process, some oils can change their smell. For example, pink aroma as a result of heating a candle becomes heavier and cloying, which not everyone may like.

From the fact that every housewife always has at hand, you can use cereal coffee, a tea mix or exotic spices. In all other respects, the manufacturing algorithm is no different from creating an ordinary candle.

Decorating Tips

Decorative design of a product cast from paraffin or wax is the most creative and fascinating process, during which you can show all your personality and creative fuse. The only rule that should be steadily observed is the location very close to the burning wick of flammable elements.

A win-win option - design in the current eco-style. A variety of natural materials are useful for this: pebbles, twigs, cones, dried leaves, flowers, aromatic herbs.

A very popular technique for decorating candles is decoupage with ordinary napkins and special candle glue that holds the decor well on the surface and at the same time protects the paper from fire.

Colored candles look beautiful. The easiest way to color them is to use wax pencils or crayons, the shavings of which should be added to the molten wax.

Some experienced craftsmen use carvings to decorate, giving the product a beautiful openwork. Find more ideas in our publication on how to decorate candles with your own hands.

Candle wick

Now we have to learn how to make a candle wick with our own hands. We make a gel, paraffin or wax candle, in any case we will need a wick. In order to make it, we need a natural cotton thread without any impurities there. As an option, take colored floss thread as a wick. It looks very cute and unusual.

The thickness and texture of the wick depend primarily on the thickness of the part of the candle that should burn. For example, there are candles, partially consisting of combustible materials. Only the core burns out in them.

For those who are going to cast a candle from wax, you need to take thick threads and not very tightly twist them. Paraffin and gel candles, on the contrary, need a tight weave of threads (otherwise the wick will smoke during burning).

Wick for candles

Wick for gel candles

You need to be careful about the following detail: if the candle is painted with wax crayons, small shavings can clog the wick without dissolving in paraffin or wax. In general, there are a lot of nuances in this matter, be prepared for the fact that you will have to trial and error to select a wick for a certain type of candle.

If you take a very thick wick, excessive melting of the candle is not excluded, and this is fraught with soot. If you make a very thin wick, it will constantly go out.

There are several design options for the wick: it can be crocheted, braided, twisted with a rope. Before pouring candles, it is possible to soak the thread with wax, but you can simultaneously fill and soak.

If you do not want to waste time making wicks, then use a wick from ready-made household candles.

Candle mold

In this matter, your imagination plays a decisive role. You can use any form of plastic or metal that you think is pretty and appropriate for making candles. Do not limit yourself to ready-made cookie cutters: packaging from yoghurts, cream jars, baking tins, tin cans, glasses or mugs that can withstand high temperatures can also play their role. Some even use milk tetrapack as a mold for a future candle.

Candles poured into tea cups

Eggshell candles

But for your first experience, it’s better not to be smart: take something simple. For example, a glass of yogurt. Be sure to remove the paper label first, because it may catch fire.

We take our glass and in the middle of its bottom with a thick needle we pierce a hole - we insert a ready-made wick there. On the back of the cup, the wick must be tied in a knot.

On it we need to tie the other end of the wick. It should be placed strictly in the center in a vertical even position. So, you guarantee yourself that the candle will burn evenly and melt.

Candle coloring

You will get really beautiful candles provided that you do not forget to color them. The easiest and most acceptable way is to color the candles with simple children's wax crayons.

Do you think it would be wiser to use watercolor or gouache? Indeed, the palette of these colors is richer than the color variety of crayons. But the problem is that both gouache and watercolor are made on a water-soluble basis: these dyes are unsuitable for working with a candle. They mix poorly with wax or paraffin, can float in them of an incomprehensible color in flakes, and then completely settle to the bottom.

Decor candles can and should be done only with dyes on a fat-soluble basis, and this is our wax crayons.

Often, many craftsmen in the decoration of candles use lipsticks or shadows. If you are not sorry for your cosmetics, please, follow their example. But be sure that the scent of lipstick, which is far from always pleasant, will be floating all over the house. To many, this smell may seem intrusive.

If you already undertook to make decorative candles with your own hands, it is better to use less aggressive materials. Choosing wax crayons, we dwell on the soft types of this dye. Especially good are candles made using mother-of-pearl wax crayons.

If you come across hard crayons, the process of melting them will be difficult. Yes, and planing them is quite problematic. So, we selected the crayon, using a grater weighed it and added this shavings to the wax cinders. Thoroughly mixed shavings and cinder sticks.

However, there is another option for staining. In special stores, it is easy to find tablet pigments of different colors. They can be mixed with each other, dosed. Using such pigments, you will be able to make a truly unusual, bright or delicate candle. Pigments in tablets greatly expand the possibility of obtaining interesting shades.

You should not refuse to use dyes: they give the candle a unique look and create a unique pattern.

Candle fill

Now the wick is ready, it's time to fill. We need a regular tin can. It has to be flattened a little to form a peculiar nose. This is to make the process of pouring molten material easier.

Pre-prepared form is best lubricated with a thin layer of dishwashing liquid or plain vegetable oil. Both that, and other means are equally good.

In the jar we need to put the fragments of candles (candles should be the same in quality). If we are going to make a paraffin or wax candle, you can take a saucepan or ladle for melting, which is not very a pity. In any case, this container should be placed in the pan that will be used as a water bath. In principle, you can use anything you want, except glassware.

So, we fill the pan with water, boil the water, and then immerse the container with wax or paraffin. So our material will melt.

When the material and chips have completely melted, you can begin to fill the candles.

Fill the bottom of our mold with wax, let cool. Do not rush to immediately fill the entire form, otherwise a lot of wax or paraffin may leak through the hole in the bottom. Fill the wax with layers, then what has leaked out is sent again for remelting. When the candle is completely filled, it needs to be cooled. The temperature should be room temperature.

Many people make a mistake at this point: they try to speed up the cooling process by placing a candle in the freezer. In this case, it can spread unevenly.

This is not critical if we fill the candle upside down. If you use another method, then you should leave a little wax in order to fill the indentations next to the wick. And after drying, they will certainly appear.

When already the temperature of the candle becomes equal to the temperature of the room, you need to untie the knot at the bottom of the form. At this moment, we remove the product itself by gently pulling the wick.

If you can’t do this, the form can be cut. Or put it in the refrigerator for a moment, and then substitute it under hot water for a few seconds.

After that, we cut off the excess part of the wick, leaving a tip of 1 cm. If ugly seams remain from the mold, they can be removed with hot water. But with these manipulations, the candle may become cloudy, its luster may fade. Therefore, the optimal solution would be to choose a shape for a candle that does not contain seams.

DIY aroma candles

Making aromatic candles with your own hands is quite realistic. In particular, it is worth doing to those who are a real fan of aromatherapy. In order for you to get exactly aroma candles, you need to add some essential oils before pouring into wax. The choice of oil depends on your taste: you can add any kind of oil, unless pink is worth taking. After all, its burning smell will be suffocating, heavy.

It’s great if the decor of the aroma candle matches the plant whose oil we use. For example, taking lavender oil as the basis of the aroma, pink or lilac dyes should prevail in the candle decor.

Using laurel or peppermint oil, decorate the candle better with green shades.

Vanilla or cinnamon will be organic in the warm, beige-brown tones of the candle.

Not only oils can make your candle aromatic, regular coffee is a strong and pleasant aroma.

In principle, achieving a candle fragrance is not so difficult. Aromatic oils are added to paraffin, wax or gel. And then the process of making an aromatic candle is no different from creating an ordinary candle.

Experimenters are advised to mix oils: an unusual bouquet of aromas is guaranteed to you. If you are afraid to “nudge” and synthesize incompatible odors, see the recipes for perfumes. Follow their instructions, but do not add rose oil.

Gel candles

And now let's talk about how to make gel candles with your own hands. In order for us to get gel candles, it is better to use ready-made gel wax. On the packages with it, the recipe for creating candles is often written, and you can use it.

The following recipe can help those who are used to doing everything themselves:

  • 5 g of gelatin
  • 2 g tannin
  • 20 ml of water
  • 35 ml glycerin

First, we need to dissolve the tannin in glycerin during heating. We continue to heat, adding to the composition of the remains of glycerin and gelatin. Add water to the resulting clear solution. The mixture is brought to a boil. Some clouding of the solution should not scare you: it will disappear soon. Until the water has completely evaporated, you need to boil the solution.

And then pour the mixture into a glass form with refractory characteristics. When burning candles do not emit smell and smoke, they are transparent.

In gel candles, you can also add essential oil, this does not contradict the recipe. A separate, especially pleasant process, decorating gel candles. Decorative elements are freely laid at the bottom of any transparent container: beads, beads, pebbles, shells, sequins, coffee beans, dry plant stems or flowers. Then fill everything with gel transparent wax. Such a candle looks simply incredible: transparent, delicate, with a magical pattern inside.

Coffee candles

Making decorative candles is also not difficult. For example, you can make an original coffee candle. Decor - naturally, with coffee beans. The principle of operation is as follows: a small form is inserted into a large form. Between the walls of two forms, you need to fill in coffee beans, and then pour them with a candle mass.

As soon as the mass with coffee beans has frozen, the walls need to be blown with a hot hairdryer. Due to this, excess paraffin drains, coffee grains will be clearly visible.

So the outer layer with coffee beans is ready. We put it back into shape, fill it with paraffin / wax of a different color from the inside.

Coffee candles can be as follows:

In the same way, you can make sea candles: instead of grains, they will have pebbles or seashells. As an option - transparent gel candles with small pebbles or grains of coffee.

Candle Decoration Options

How else can you decorate a candle made by yourself? The first way to give your candle originality is to use unusual, unexpected forms. Sometimes an interesting shape can be more advantageous than even the most skillful decor. A wonderful element of the decor of candles is all sorts of glass coasters.

In a specialized store you can find special stickers for decor. Or decoupage is a great way to decorate candles. By the way, it is very fashionable among professional candlesticks. Most often, napkins are used as the basis for decoupage. Do not forget about safety: use a special varnish for candles.

For fans of original decor, the following option is suitable:

Before filling, lay shells, pieces of dried fruit, cinnamon, seeds, dried flowers on the edges of the form. Or let it be coffee beans in an ensemble with rhinestones and beads. But in the latter case, it will be more appropriate to talk about the decor of the finished product: we insert decorative elements into the melted paraffin / wax.

An already frozen candle can be glued with bamboo or cinnamon sticks. You can add star anise stars or the same coffee beans to them. It will be a beautiful decoration for aroma candles.

If you use dried plants (or any other decorative elements that can become combustible), the wick of the candle should be thin so that the candle melts only in the middle.

In principle, if you have the opportunity to apply for material in specialized stores, there you will gain a lot of useful tools. For example, markers and contours are sold there, they do not burn, and during the smoldering of the wick they melt together with wax / paraffin.

Do not want to collect old candle cinders - use paraffin balls or candle gel. In specialized stores you can even find ready-made wicks (with a metal holder). For floating candles, you can purchase a specially designed wax.

Today, the imagination of a creative person is practically unbound: prices for materials for making candles “do not bite”, the process is exciting and not as long as it might seem. Having once created a beautiful candle with your own hands, you are unlikely to deny yourself the pleasure of experimenting yet.
