A wood frog (the second name for tree frogs) is found in almost the entire European territory. Usually calm, she sits on stones, plants, trunks or leaves of trees, in the grass. You can’t immediately notice it in nature - with its appearance, tree frog resembles a leaf of a tree; moreover, it is well disguised as the surrounding surroundings. So she hunts, waiting for insects. Tree frog is an active animal: it swims superbly and easily jumps onto plants. In nature, tree frog activity increases with the onset of twilight, it is at this time that the real hunt begins. The darkness does not prevent the frog from looking for prey - it has excellent eyesight. The vast majority of its diet is made up of flying insects: mosquitoes, flies, butterflies. But she does not disdain and catching small, mobile animals. Her weapon is not only a sticky tongue, but also the jaw with which she can capture flightless prey. Is tree frog poisonous? No, this is a harmless species, tree frog honestly captures prey without paralyzing it. The frog is protected from external danger by its ability to hide, merging with the outside world.
In summer, in the active season, tree frogs do not hide in crevices or minks. They rest and hide from danger and bad weather in the foliage of shrubs or grass. They wait for the winter underground, climbing into holes left by other animals, under rocks, into crevices of rocks, tree hollows, and can go to the bottom of a reservoir for wintering.
Tree frog breeding
For breeding, frogs need to choose a suitable place - a standing pond, surrounded by shores with high vegetation (trees, shrubs, reeds). Males, sitting in water or on bushes, attract females with rhythmic calls, thanks to the available throat resonators. We all heard the croaking of frogs. It is the developed resonators that nature supplied the males that allow them to make very loud sounds. An impressive chorus spontaneously organized in the spawning reservoir, where all the males gather, reaches its climax, usually in the evening. Females come to the breeding place only lay eggs and leave, and males do not leave here for the entire spawning period, so they are always the majority and females can choose from in the reservoir.
The female lays several servings (from 3 to 21) of eggs, which are a lump of various number of eggs attached to aquatic plants. They can be from 15 to 215 pcs. Embryos develop one to two weeks, transforming into larvae grow another 1.5-3 months. It happens that the larvae winter and grow in small frogs only in the next year. Little tree frogs are first kept on the banks of their native reservoir, and then, by analogy with the behavior of adults, they find a place for wintering. Tree frogs become sexually mature at the age of 2-4 years. In the wild, common tree frog can live up to 12 years, and when kept in a terrarium - up to 20-22.
Challenges: population decline
Common tree frog is a vivid example of the rapid disappearance of amphibians. Over the past 100 years, its range within Russian borders has declined markedly - in some central regions of the European part and within the Southern Urals, this species of frogs has disappeared. Tree frogs are also declining in other European countries. The main reason for this disaster is industrial pollution of the environment, or, as is commonly called, biotopes of the species.
Maybe that’s why tree frogs today have become a favorite content in home terrariums. Let's talk about the rules for caring for these animals and the necessary equipment to ensure their comfortable life.
What to prepare: vertical terrarium
For tree frog, a vertical-type aquaterrarium is suitable, including a small pond, a stretch of coast and vegetation. The minimum size of the terrarium for 1-2 animals is 20x20 cm at the base and 50 cm in height (excluding the height of the lamp). Equip the tank with additional downward daytime heating using an incandescent or mirror lamp. At night, the terrarium is not heated. Temperature during the day should be maintained at 23-26 ° C, at night - 16-20 ° C.
Inside, imitating the natural landscape:
• Place small snags, branches, twigs on which the frog will rest.
• Water-loving plants are planted or installed in containers: bromeliads, anubias, orchid, small ficus, philodendrons, scindapsus, etc.
• Arrange a shallow (8-15 cm) pond with aquarium plants - echinodorus, cryptocorynes. The bottom is laid out with aquarium pebbles, near the shore a large stone is set up, protruding from the water. You can run into the reservoir several snails, ampullaria, providing a natural cleaning of the walls.
• At the rear or side wall of the terrarium, equip the shore with a substrate, which is necessary for the placed plants. When using potted plants, the shore is surrounded by sphagnum.
Every day the terrarium is sprayed with warm water - the moss should not dry out. Tree frogs can be kept singly or in a group.
Another type of terrarium
They also use another entourage in the terrarium - without land plants, but only with representatives of the aquarium flora floating in the water. Such an aquaterrarium should be large: on the base - 30x30 cm, height - 40-50 cm. Half of the water is poured, large stones with imitation of grottoes are installed, a large number of aquarium plants are placed. Experience shows that tree frogs feel good in such conditions.
It is necessary to equip any terrarium so that it is convenient to clean. Such events should be carried out at least once every 3-4 weeks.
Common tree frog (Hyla arborea) (experience in terrarium)
Common tree frog is one of the prettiest little frogs of our fauna, which most often falls into our terrariums. She is famous for her absolutely peaceful character, interesting and active hunting behavior and excellent appetite. In addition, keeping ordinary tree frog at home is quite simple, shitty provide them with food in the form of all kinds of insects and their larvae. And then from time to time the males will thank you for taking care of the evening song concerts, which they will arrange not so much for their owners, but for future brides.
Before you start these lovely amphibians at home, take care of a suitable home for them. And the tree frog is best suited for a small vertical-type terrarium, the bottom area of which is 20x20 cm, and a height of about 50 cm. A small shallow body of water, with a depth of 5-10 cm with clear water, is also needed. in which tree frogs like to dive and freshen up from time to time. Mandatory and dense vegetation, represented by moisture-loving species, on which tree frogs will spend most of the time. And in the pond itself, aquarium plants should also be placed, both purely underwater and floating on the surface of the water. It is better to line the bottom of the reservoir with aquarium pebbles, and on its edge it is advisable to install a large stone on which tree frogs will be happy to sit after taking water procedures. For natural cleaning of the walls of the pond, it is possible to settle several snails in it - an ampoule that feeds on growing algae. It is better to equip the door in the terrarium from above, and always keep the top closed, since tree frogs are first-class climbers. In addition, live crickets or flies launched through the door should not leave the terratium, otherwise you will have to hunt hunters and their prey throughout the apartment.
Although ordinary tree frogs do not break the stems and leaves of plants, but they must be strong enough to easily withstand these amphibians and are devoid of all kinds of thorns, thorns, etc. Therefore, in choosing the vegetation to decorate the terrarium, you can show a certain fantasy. However, it should be remembered that when arranging the terrarium, it should be equipped so that it is convenient to clean at least once a month.
That is why, all plants are best planted in flower pots, with which they are placed on the bottom or walls of the terrarium and decorated. It is advisable to regularly spray air in the terrarium at least once a day with water to maintain high humidity there (approximately 90%), since these amphibians do not like dry air. In addition, tree frogs regularly molt, changing their thin upper layer of skin - for this they need a moist atmosphere. Helping themselves with their paws, they removed the old integument, which immediately eats it up.
To keep tree frogs, you can use another type of terrarium - horizontal, with a bottom of 30x30 cm and a height of about 40 cm. In such cases, water is poured up to half the volume, and large stones are installed on the bottom, rising above the water surface, and a large number of aquariums will be placed in the water plants floating on a surface and towering above it. In such conditions, tree frogs will be all comfortable both in water and on land.
Tree frogs are most active at dusk: in the morning and evening hours, and at night, like during the day, they usually sleep. And feeding these frogs is best done with tweezers. And if you have several tree frogs, then you can control the amount of feed received by each inhabitant of the terrarium. The tree frog diet can include almost any insects and their larvae and other non-toxic invertebrates. It is more convenient and easiest to feed tree frogs at home with cockroaches and flies. You can also give flour worm larvae, various crickets (brownies, bananas, two-spotted), etc. It is advisable to pre-feed the vitamins for amphibians and then give them tree frogs. Young tree frogs can be fed with the same feeds as adults, but only smaller ones, for example, small crickets.
The body color of tree frogs is normally quite bright, but if tree frogs have very faded covers - it means they are cold, and then you need to turn on an ordinary, desk lamp to heat them. A special ultraviolet must be turned on every other day for 10-20 minutes to destroy microorganisms that can subsequently cause diseases in tree frogs.
With normal content and good mood, tree frog males can maintain a conversation by hearing music or loud voices. At the same time, they begin to make a croak in the form of a continuous trill, which can be transmitted as a “cre-cre-cre,” which lasts about two minutes, when with a stop, and when without. Males usually "sing" to you every morning and every evening, although not for long, but females make a very loud squeak rarely and only in case of danger.
What you need to know about behavior
Common frog frog, with its peaceful disposition, good appetite and calm behavior, quickly adapts to captivity. As a rule, it does not create problems for future owners, but one should take into account the fact that the male will periodically “sing”. It is noticed that males love to "talk", especially if they hear the sounds of music or conversation. Females are more silent: she can cast her voice only in case of danger.
The red-eyed tree frog is a medium-sized frog, 2.5 - 5 cm. Originally from the tropical forests of the extreme south of Mexico and Central America. Most active at night, at which time they can be seen and heard. They live exclusively on trees, in the afternoon they hide among dense tropical foliage.
Adult red-eyed tree frog, as a rule, 2.5 - 4 cm in length. Females are almost always larger, both in length and weight, so the frog’s sex can be determined by size.
How many these frogs live in nature is not known, but they are very hardy when kept in a home terrarium. Under the right conditions of maintenance and care, these terrarium tree frogs will delight you for up to 10 years or more. The average life expectancy in a terrarium is 10 years.
Discoloration in captivity
If the tree frog has changed the usual green skin color, you should pay attention to this. Darkening is an indicator of any irritation. The fading of the color indicates that the animals are cold, it is necessary to turn on the heating. It is necessary to conduct sessions of ultraviolet irradiation (15 minutes every other day) to destroy pathogens.
At the end of wintering, the male and female are placed in a terrarium together. The female lays several servings of eggs that attach to aquatic plants. Tadpoles appear after 8-14 days and another 1.5-3 months develop. They are recommended to be deposited separately in specially prepared horizontal aquaterrariums with bridges to exit the water after transformation. Before metamorphosis, the tadpole reaches 4.5-5 cm. The water temperature is maintained at a level of 20-24 ° C, aeration is carried out using a compressor, as well as adjustable filtration.
Common tree frog is a reptile with a pronounced period of rest. In winter, it is necessary to provide it to "home" pets:
• during 2 weeks to reduce heating to shutdown,
• tree frog is placed in a breathable, but without access to light, cage filled with moist moss, and placed in a cool place (15-17 ° C) for 2-4 days,
• the container is installed on the shelf of the refrigerator, where the temperature is maintained at 8-10 ° C for 2 months (while remembering to maintain humidity in the cage).
Exit from wintering is carried out in the reverse order.
All standard glass reptile terrariums are ideal for keeping red-eyed tree frogs. Ready-made terrariums for frogs are easy to clean, they are available in various sizes, they retain heat well and maintain humidity.
The recommended volume of the terrarium for the content of adult red-eyed tree frog is 75 liters. In such a terrarium, you can keep 3-4 frogs at home. In a smaller terrarium, frogs can be injured when they jump, hitting the glass.
Young animals can also be kept in smaller containers, but they grow rapidly, so more space will be needed very soon.
Light and warm
Red-eyed tropical tree frogs should be kept at moderately warm air temperatures throughout the day. In the room where the terrarium is located, the temperature should not exceed 27 ° C, the optimum temperature in the terrarium is 25-28 ° C. At night, the temperature can drop to 15 ° C, but since these are nocturnal animals, a warmer night environment is recommended.
If you live in warmer regions, or in the summer months, when the temperature is high enough, additional heating may not be required. However, if the temperature drops below the recommended temperature, an additional heat source is needed.
For heating, incandescent lamps of small power, up to 60 W, or heaters that provide soft heat, without excessive drying, are suitable. Red lamps are great, as they can be left at night to provide frogs with warmth 24 hours a day.
Specialized full-spectrum lighting is not necessary for red-eyed frogs to live normally in captivity, but weak ultraviolet (UVB) lamps will be useful. Such lamps will not only help you observe the animals, but will be useful to the planted living plants in the terrarium and provide frogs with UV rays.
Substrate and scenery
There are several requirements for the substrate used for the red-eyed tree frog. It must maintain the necessary level of humidity, but it must also be easy to wash, resistant to mold and mildew. Coconut products such as EcoEarth, CocoSoft and others pressed into coconut bricks or coconut shavings are ideal for these purposes. Orchid bark or sphagnum moss is also suitable. All this can be found in specialized stores.
Red-eyed tree frogs are tree frogs, they need a lot of climbing devices to climb up. Branching sticks, decorations from the bark of trees, living and artificial plants must be used to create a comfortable natural environment for frogs. You can recreate a real living tropical corner that will decorate your home.
Plants (living or plastic) choose with large, wide leaves, as they are more suitable for plants surrounding nature frogs, and are suitable for shelter and sleep. Living plants should be tolerant of high temperatures and high humidity, as well as your lighting conditions. An additional light source may be required if the plants wither away.
Water and humidity
In the terrarium, the red-eyed tree frog must have a large small dish with water.
д. You can spray the liquid manually, or you can use automated systems, especially if you are away for a long period of time.
Feed and feeding
Red-eyed tree frogs, insectivorous frogs, in captivity will feed on crickets (grasshoppers) and other nutritious insects. Some adult frogs can eat various worms, but most prefer grasshoppers at any age. On sale you can find specialized food for terrarium frogs - canned grasshoppers. These are specially dried grasshoppers that preserve all the nutrients. But you can feed and live food, if possible.
Make sure the food is the right size so the frogs can eat them. Adult tree frog is able to swallow even the largest cricket, but children need tiny grasshoppers, no more than 0.5 cm long.
All foods are regularly sprinkled with high quality calcium and vitamin D3. This is especially important for young, growing frogs, they should receive supplements at every feeding. Adult frogs may take this supplement less frequently.
In addition to the calcium supplement mentioned above, reptiles also need multivitamins. They are given in the form of a powder once or twice a week.
Always read the instructions for the use of both calcium and vitamin supplements for proper dosing, as they differ from one manufacturer to another.
Like most frogs, red-eyed tree frogs cannot tolerate excessive communication with humans. Although they are harmless and can be touched for short periods of time, they are not tame pets. Besides the fact that it is very stressful for the animal, the frog has sensitive skin, which can easily absorb pathogens or toxins from our hands.
